About

Background

Berry Medicine Native BirthWork Initiatives is an emerging, Indigenous-led nonprofit grounded in the belief that birthing people are sacred and birth is ceremony. Originally launched as the Native American Initiatives (NAI) program under Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies – The Montana Coalition (HMHB) in 2023, Berry Medicine is now transitioning into a fully independent organization—Montana’s first Indigenous-led birthwork nonprofit.

Historical Timeline

Critical Allyship

Berry Medicine reflects a bold and necessary evolution of HMHB’s commitment to equitable maternal health. This transition honors the trust built by NAI, uplifts Indigenous leadership, and strengthens Montana’s maternal health landscape through decolonized, community-driven solutions.

Working Mission & Vision

Berry Medicine exists to reclaim traditional knowledge, build Indigenous leadership, and advance birth justice in Tribal and urban Native communities across Montana. Our work supports Indigenous BirthWorkers and community leaders in addressing maternal health disparities through culturally grounded care, organizing, and policy change.

Future Directions

  • Continue to grow a statewide base of Indigenous maternal health leaders
  • Sustain community-led organizing through virtual and in-person gatherings
  • Formalize infrastructure to support our transition into an independent nonprofit
